Boat Washing & Cleaning
Washing a Boat - Traditional Methods
Boats are in the water all the time, so why do they need washing? Salt water and fresh water both have organisms living in them that can attach to your boat hull. If oxidation has created weak spots in the gel coat, algae can work its way into coating. Before you know it, your boat has turned green with algae!
Regular washing keeps algae at bay. Washing removes corrosive salt from sea-faring boats. Rinse down your boat with fresh water after every voyage and wash it with a boat shampoo regularly. Always wash your boat before storing it at the end of season. Marine 31 Gel Coat Wash & Wax with Carnauba is a great option. This particular shampoo gently removes dirt, grime and soiling while imparting a high-gloss, protective layer of carnauba wax. A soft Natural Sea Sponge or Sheepskin Wash Mitt will make the job easy. For very large boats, a Montana Boar's Hair Original Wash Brush PLUS & Telescopic Handle will help you reach tall boats. For added protection and shine, apply a quick coat of Marine 31 Gel Coat Spray Wax Plus after each wash.
Work around large boats with ease with a Complete Wash Bucket System with Dolly. The wheeled dolly enables you to move the wash bucket within easy reach as you work around the boat. The Grit Guard Insert in the bottom of the bucket traps grit in the bottom of the bucket, where it cannot be transferred back to the boat. Use the included seat cushion to turn your wash bucket into a creeper. Buff out the sides of the hull from a comfortable seat on wheels.
If you want a less hands-on wash process, use a Marine 31 Foamaster Fun Gun. It works with a garden hose and a high-foaming shampoo like Marine 31 Gel Coat Wash & Wax with Carnauba to deliver thick, clinging foam to your boat. Once the boat is covered in soap, use your wash brush or mitt to wipe down the boat and then rinse. If you’re an avid boater in search of a quicker way of washing your boat, look no further than the Marine 31 Foamaster Foam Gun. By coating your boat in a thick layer of frothy foam, you reduce the chance of inflicting swirls or scratches into the finish. This is especially important if your boat is painted with delicate, scratch-sensitive awlgrip paint. As soon as the foam makes contact with the surface it begins loosening dirt and grime while providing lubrication for your brush or wash mitt. As you work your way around your boat with a brush or wash mitt you don’t have to use as much effort to remove dirt and debris.
